Nova Empowers Research

Semiconductor devices continue to evolve toward smaller feature sizes, more complex material systems, and thinner film structures. Device performance and reliability are increasingly affected by interface structures, elemental diffusion, doping distribution, defects, and nanoscale chemical composition. Nova Scientific can combine advanced characterization techniques such as FIB-SEM, TEM, APT, EDS, and EBSD to perform multiscale analysis of critical regions in semiconductor materials and devices, from device cross-section and micro/nanostructure observation to nanoscale crystal structure and atomic-scale elemental distribution, providing experimental evidence for process optimization, materials research and development, and failure analysis.

For device structures and local region analysis, FIB-SEM enables precise positioning, cross-sectional processing, and site-specific sampling of wafers, thin films, and device structures, allowing targeted analysis of specific functional layers, interfaces, defects, and failure regions. Combined with SEM morphology and EDS elemental analysis, cross-sectional structures and elemental distributions can be rapidly acquired, providing reliable target regions for subsequent TEM or APT analysis.

For thin films, interfaces, and nanostructures, TEM/STEM enables high-resolution observation of ultrathin layers, heterointerfaces, nanostructures, and crystal defects in semiconductor materials, with SAED, EDS, and other techniques used to analyze crystal structure, elemental composition, and interfacial relationships. For nanoscale chemical changes beyond the reach of conventional 2D characterization, APT can be applied for 3D atomic-scale analysis of critical regions.

For doping, elemental diffusion, and interfacial chemistry, APT provides near-atomic-scale 3D elemental distribution information, enabling analysis of dopant spatial distribution, diffusion behavior, and elemental migration between different material layers. Elemental partitioning and chemical gradients at thin film/substrate interfaces, heterojunctions, and multilayer structures can be quantitatively studied through 3D reconstruction, concentration profiles, and proxigram analysis, providing data support for diffusion control and interface optimization in semiconductor processing.

For nanoscale defects and failures in advanced devices, FIB-based precise positioning and cross-sectional sampling enable targeted sampling of cracks, pores, interfacial anomalies, local contamination, and other failure regions. TEM, EDS, and APT then analyze structural and chemical changes around the defects across multiple scales. By linking "failure location—local structure—elemental distribution—interfacial chemistry," potential failure mechanisms can be further traced.

For new semiconductor materials and advanced process development, Nova Scientific offers collaborative characterization workflows — FIB precise sample preparation → TEM structural characterization → APT 3D chemical analysis — targeting thin films, heterostructures, diffusion barrier layers, metal interconnects, and complex interfaces. By integrating complementary information from different techniques, microscopic morphology, crystal structure, and atomic-scale chemical composition are linked, providing experimental evidence for material screening, process optimization, and device reliability studies.
